FEI statement on misinformation and the fair treatment of athletes & officials

PRESS RELEASE

The FEI acknowledges the invaluable role that the media, and research expertise plays in highlighting issues within our sport. Without responsible journalism and the work of the academic community around the world, equestrian sport would not have evolved to the level of professionalism and welfare standards we see today.

We respect the diversity of voices within the equestrian community, including those who challenge our practices and push us to continuously improve. These voices serve as our mirror, aiding us in our daily work of ensuring the welfare of the horse remains our top priority. We also acknowledge the many journalists who report with integrity and professionalism, and we value their role in keeping the equestrian community informed and accountable.

The FEI welcomes open discussions about the role of horses in sport, but it is critical that these discussions are based on accurate information and constructive dialogue. Misinformation — whether through omission, misrepresentation, or lack of context — can mislead the public and damage trust in the sport.

A number of Dressage athletes and FEI Officials have found themselves targeted and are facing unverified accusations and scrutiny by some parts of the media. It is disheartening to see dedicated professionals, who have committed their lives to the care of their horses and to the sport, feel as though they are being subjected to undue pressure from those seeking to spread disinformation.

Change must of course come from within, driven by a shared commitment to horse welfare and sporting excellence. The FEI remains committed to listening, learning, and evolving. And while we fully support addressing wrongdoing within the sport, it is unjust to subject the entire community to suspicion and criticism. True progress requires collaboration and a safe environment where individuals can reflect and adapt without fear of public shaming.

The media are vital to equestrian sport. We urge those who report on it to do so fairly and accurately.

Fry (GBR) sparks magic with Glamourdale in 's-Hertogenbosch (NED)

The tension was palpable at the final FEI Dressage World Cup™ Western European League qualifier of the season. In 's-Hertogenbosch, Charlotte Fry (GBR) and Glamourdale emerged victorious once again, securing their ticket to the Final with a perfect record of three wins out of three appearances. However, her compatriot Becky Moody (GBR) and Jagerbomb came within touching distance. Belgium’s rising star Justin Verboomen (BEL) wowed the crowd and finished in third place.

Fry and Moody dominated in a sold-out arena in 's-Hertogenbosch, going head-to-head in a battle of British excellence. The reigning World Champion Fry edged out her fellow Brit in both tests, delivering a flawless Freestyle performance that scored 89.705%. Having already claimed victories in London and Amsterdam, Fry amassed a total of 60 points, comfortably securing her place at the FEI Dressage World Cup™ Final in Basel in three weeks’ time.
Becky Moody and her home-bred Jagerbomb, as well as Belgium’s Justin Verboomen with Zonik Plus, are still uncertain of their Final spots, potentially lacking the necessary points.

Home athletes take a back seat

With many top combinations travelling to 's-Hertogenbosch for the final opportunity to secure points, the start list featured an exceptionally strong field. This left the Dutch home athletes playing a more supporting role, particularly after home favourite Dinja van Liere (NED) withdrew before the Grand Prix. The best Dutch result came from Marlies van Baalen (NED), who, with her home-bred Habibi DVB N.O.P., produced a harmonious Freestyle to harp music, scoring 77.525%. While their test impressed in terms of harmony, they lost points in the walk section.

Belgium, however, made a much bigger impact, with three Belgian athletes finishing in the top seven. Domien Michiels (BEL) and Intermezzo van het Meerdaalhof (owned by Marc Steeno) delivered a faultless Freestyle with soft contact and a powerful canter tour. Larissa Pauluis (BEL) followed with a dynamic and energetic performance aboard Flambeau (owned by Marie Christine Pauluis, Jean Pauluis, Caroline and Emmanuelle Lepage), with deep bass tones resonating through the arena. Scoring 79.895%, Pauluis secured a fifth-place finish and earned enough points to book her place in the Final.

Yet, it was Justin Verboomen and Zonik Plus who led the Belgian charge. Following a runner-up finish in Mechelen, the pair impressed again in 's-Hertogenbosch, claiming third place. Their piaffe and passage were breathtaking, and their Freestyle was rewarded with 84.160%. “Already when Zonik Plus was young, I knew he had so much potential. He is a fighter, a winner,” said a slightly reserved Verboomen. Despite his strong performances, he may fall short on points for a Final spot, having only contested two qualifiers.

Basquin and Nowag-Aulenbrock

The second half of the competition saw scores soar, with fewer mistakes, and ever-more refined technical and artistic execution. Pauline Basquin (FRA) and Sertorius de Rima Z IFCE (owned by Institut Français du Cheval et de L’Equitation) added valuable points to their tally following their victory in Madrid, securing their ticket to Basel. Their test was highlighted by lightness and harmony in the trot tour, earning them 78.555% and an eighth place.

Bianca Nowag-Aulenbrock (GER) and the ever-cheerful Florine OLD (owned by Elisabeth von Wulffen) also clinched their spot in the Final. The striking chestnut mare confidently pranced through the test with ears forward, although marks were lost in the piaffe. Their 78.965% score and sixth-place finish sealed their qualification.

Werth gears up for her 26th Final

Dressage queen Isabell Werth (GER) remains atop the FEI Dressage World Cup™ standings with 75 points. Riding DSP Quantaz (owned by Madeleine Winter-Schulze and Victoria Max-Theurer), she had to settle for fourth place this year in 's-Hertogenbosch after winning here in 2024. However, her place in the Final was never in doubt. The German legend is now set to contest her astonishing 26th FEI Dressage World Cup™ Final.

British stars take centre stage

The leading roles in 's-Hertogenbosch, however, belonged to Charlotte Fry and Becky Moody. Fry brought the crowd to its feet. Glamourdale (owned by the athlete and Gertjan van Olst) was in outstanding form, showcasing a breathtaking combination of beauty, uphill balance, power, elegance, and harmony. “I don’t get emotional very often, but today when the crowd started clapping and cheering, it just got me,” said Fry, who shed a few tears after her performance.

"Today was going to be our day. Glamourdale rose to the occasion. He is such a showman. Lucky for me, he is perfect in every way: he has the conformation, the character, the determination, the showmanship. I just have to make sure to sit there and make everything look pretty."

Charlotte Fry

(GBR)

Becky Moody and Jagerbomb (co-owned by Moody and Jo Cooper) delivered a personal best, scoring 87.545%, much to Moody's delight. “I’m so proud of him! He is a truly exceptional horse. His heart is his most talented part: he always gives absolutely everything. I’m so lucky to have him,” she beamed.

All eyes on Basel
Reigning FEI Dressage World Cup™ champion Patrik Kittel finished 11th in ‘s-Hertogenbosch with Forever Young HRH. However, as the defending champion, he is automatically qualified for the Final.

The start list for the 38th FEI Dressage World Cup™ Final will take shape very soon, so don’t miss a hoofbeat…

New PRE Prix St Georges and Grand Prix Dressage Team

PRESS RELEASE

ANCCE announces the creation of a PRE Prix St Georges and Grand Prix team. This newest project places the spotlight on Purebred Spanish Horse competing at these levels. With this initiative, ANCCE reinforces its commitment with adult horses in this discipline to provide them a platform for the growth of pairs seeking excellence at national and international levels.

This team brings together the most competitive pairs at the Prix St Georges and Grand Prix levels to represent PRE Horses at international competitions. Horses will be selected by the Selection Committee, that will assess the pairs at International Dressage Competitions (CDI) both within Spain’s borders and abroad.

Summons and Selection Process
The ANCCE Selection Committee will review and follow the pairs participating at international competitions between January first and June fifteenth of this year 2025. The results throughout this period will be pivotal when selecting the members of the aforementioned team.

Economic Support and International Participation
The main novelty is that as of September of this year, the selected pairs will have access to economic aid ranging between €1000 and €1500 to compete internationally at CDIs. The exact amount will depend on the number of pairs included on the team. This aid is granted to the owner of the horse selected.

The Selection Committee is fully independent to assign the places. Thus, it is possible that there be vacancies, depending on the candidate’s level. Likewise, the number of places has not been fixed so that only the most outstanding pairs become members of the team.

Selection Requirements
To seek a place on the ANCCE PRE Team, the pair must comply with the following requirements:

- Present the results earned at national and international CDIs.
- Sign a Commitment Agreement with the team.
- Have official veterinarian certification.
- Follow the planning established by the Trainer.

Expenses and Financing
Expenses for travel, accommodations and participation at international competitions is covered by each individual pair selected.

Verdener Auction High Level New concept well received

Verden. For the first time, dressage horses ready to compete were auctioned inVerden. The collection of the Verden Auction High Level included 20 horses, most of which had already achieved success in the dressage arena. The top-priced horse was Vision, who was sold for 123,000 euros.

‘This is a format that customers want and have responded well to,’ said auctioneer Bernd Hickert. The dressage horses, between five and twelve years of age, were sent to Verden with their trainers and presented there by them. Depending on the level of training and quality, different starting bids were called for.

The first horse in the auction attracted the greatest interest. The nine-year-old Vitalis/Werther son Vision (breeder: Ludger Emke, Cloppenburg, exhibitor: Rhenania Pferde GmbH, Essen) came seventh in the 2022 Bundeschampionat. Last year, the impressive chestnut, who is 1.77 metres tall, achieved his first victory at S level with Ann-Christin Wienkamp. A regular customer from Hamburg made her vision come true by purchasing him for 123,000 euros and can now call the chestnut her own.

The second-place finisher in the statistics will also move into a box in the Hamburg area. Fincenzo, born in 2018 by For Dance/Destano (breeder.: Kurt Bolte, Syke-Okel, exhibitor: Hendrik Bolte-Oestmann, Syke-Okel), cost 115,000 euros. Julia Bolte has successfully presented the shiny black stallion in dressage horse tests up to medium (M) level in the past two years. Fincenzos' pedigree includes the legendary DLGChampion Mare St.Pr.St. Goldlady, with whom Julia Bolte's grandfather Heinrich celebrated countless show successes.

The net revenue for the 20 horses of the Verden High Level auction exceeded theone million euro mark, totalling 1,132,000 euros. Six horses will leave Germany.

PRESS RELEASE - Stallion licensing and more in Danish Warmblood

The Danish Warmblood stallion licensing in Herning taking place from March 5-9, features five days of stallion licensing, international dressage and jumping competitions alongside a massive fair and two spectacular Galla Shows

Danish Warmblood Stallion Show in Herning. Copyright free photo: Ridehesten.com

Every exhibition hall and stable at the impressive MCH Exhibition Center Herning is utilized when the breeding federation, Danish Warmblood, hosts its stallion licensing. This year marks the 45th year of the Danish Warmblood Stallion Show in Herning, which has evolved into a well-oiled event, supported by 350 indispensable volunteers.

The event includes the licensing of 3- and 4-year-old stallions, as well as older stallions, combined with international CDI5*, 3*, and 1* dressage competitions and CSI3* + 1* jumping. The event also features the DWB Young Horse Championship final for 5-year-old horses and two breathtaking Galla Shows on Friday and Saturday evenings, all complemented by a fair with over 235 vendors. Last year, more than 62,000 spectators attended this spectacular event, contributing to a fantastic atmosphere across the three arenas.

As always, this year’s collection from Danish breeders is eagerly awaited, with foreign young stallions supplementing the Danish-bred participants. In the Danish Warmblood selection system, stallions are categorized by age. While the 3-year-olds are undergoing their selection process culminating on Sunday, some of the 4- and 5-year-old dressage stallions will receive their licensing on Tuesday and can participate in show classes during the event.

Stallion grading
The Stallion Licencing presented by Future Dressage opens Wednesday, March 5, with a voluntary test under saddle for the 3-year-old dressage and jumping stallions. Stallions that pass this rideability test and are approved on Sunday will be granted a one-year covering license.
All stallions will be shown by hand on a hard surface before the breeding committee on Thursday in the Dansk Hesteforsikring Arena E. Twelve dressage stallions that are 4 years or older and have approved performance tests will be graded Thursday afternoon. If licensed, they will be eligible to enter the various show classes during the event.

Performance testing system in jumping
In 2023, the testing system for young jumping stallions was modified. Approved 3-year-old stallions return as 4-year-olds and must participate in two under-saddle observation classes in jumping during the Stallion Licensing. If they perform satisfactorily, they will be granted an additional one-year covering permit. Following this, they must complete a 20-day performance test (a shortened version of the current 35-day test) in the fall, and the following year, at 5 years old, they can obtain their final licensing at the Stallion Licensing in Herning.
This year, six 5-year-old stallions will be presented for final grading before the jumping licensing committee, comprised of Johnny Hansen, Signe Wiese, Bo K. Møller, and Allan Blomgreen, on Thursday afternoon. Additionally, the jumping licensing committee will evaluate 13 preselected 3-year-old stallions in loose jumping on Saturday and Sunday, along with three preselected older stallions.

29 preselected 3-year-olds
The licensing committee for dressage, consisting of Vicky Nortvig, Bjarne Nielsen, Rune Willum and Johnny Sørensen will be judging 29 3-year-old stallions in Hering. They will be lounged on Friday in Krafft Arena M and shown loose on Sunday before sorting and awarding.

DWB Young Horse Championship & international sport
In the fall, 4-year-old Danish Warmblood horses can compete in suitability tests in either jumping or dressage. The highest-scoring young horses qualify for the DWB Young Horse Championship in Herning, where they are evaluated twice under their own riders, with the best participants moving on to be tested by a test rider. Two members of the Danish National Team—Daniel Bachmann Andersen for dressage and Lars Bak Andersen for jumping—will serve as test riders in the final of the DWB Young Horse Championship.

The international classes in dressage and jumping are eagerly awaited. In dressage the main attraction is the ECCO Five Star Dressage in Grand Prix (Friday) and Freestyle (Saturday) riders participate in CDI5*, CDI3* and CDI1*.
In jumping a strong field of international riders are heading for Herning competing in: CSI3* and CSI1* and a youngster tour (CSIYH1*), competitions for younger riders CSIYJ-A and European Youngster Cup (CSIU25-A).

More than 60,000 spectators from Denmark and abroad are expected at the Danish Warmblood Stallion Show, many of whom look forward to the spectacular gala shows on Friday and Saturday evenings.
